Hello and welcome to the, well – genesis – of ProcGenesis.com – a site that features procedural generators. We hope the tools hosted here can be helpful for worldbuilders, fantasy mapmakers, game developers, or anyone else with an interest in the intersection of programming and art that is procedural generation.
What’s in a Name? (AKA What Does ProcGenesis Even Mean?)
The name ProcGenesis comes from:
1. Procedural Generation – n. A method of creating data algorithmically as opposed to manually, often shortened to ProcGen.
and
2. Genesis – n. An origin, creation, or beginning.
So, ProcGenesis is where (some) procedural generation is created – its origin.
Meaningful and elegant combination of words? Or perhaps just a cringe-worthy semi-pun? You decide!
What PG Offers
Currently there are three map generators hosted on the site – two small map generators and one fairly comprehensive world generator. The world generator allows you to see multiple layers of the world, from temperature and elevation to cities and languages. You can also view your world as a 3-Dimensional planet or as a 3-Dimensional plane to give you a broader view of your world. These generators are all hosted online – no download required!
The Road Ahead
We plan on expanding our list of procedural generators and tools (and updating existing ones), so come back often to check out what’s new or sign up for our mailing list on the homepage to be notified directly when something interesting happens.
We’ll soon be making another blog post on how the world generator actually works, so stay tuned!
